What Is SeedVR2?
SeedVR2 is a state-of-the-art super-resolution model designed for AI image upscaling. It takes a low-resolution image and generates a high-resolution version with intelligently reconstructed detail, texture, and sharpness.
Unlike older models that tend to over-sharpen or produce artificial-looking results, SeedVR2 prioritizes natural appearance. Upscaled images look like they were captured at higher resolution rather than processed through a filter.
How It Differs from ESRGAN
ESRGAN (Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network) was one of the first AI models to produce impressive upscaling results. It uses a GAN architecture — a generator creates the upscaled image while a discriminator judges whether it looks real.
ESRGAN works well but can sometimes produce artifacts: overly sharp edges, hallucinated textures on flat areas, or a "plastic" look on skin. Real-ESRGAN improved on this with better training data and architecture, but the fundamental GAN limitations remain.
SeedVR2 uses a more modern architecture that produces cleaner, more natural results. It's particularly strong at:
- Preserving fine textures (fabric, hair, foliage)
- Maintaining natural skin appearance
- Handling mixed content (text + photos)
- Avoiding the "over-processed" look
Supported Scales
SeedVR2 supports 2x and 4x upscaling:
- 2x: Doubles dimensions (512×512 → 1024×1024)
- 4x: Quadruples dimensions (512×512 → 2048×2048)
For most use cases, 4x is sufficient to take web-resolution images to print quality.
